Art Movers Serving NYC’s Galleries, Collectors, and Creators

Looking for reliable art movers in New York City? Imperial Movers delivers the white-glove service your collection deserves.

Whether you’re relocating a single sculpture or transporting an entire private collection of paintings, we secure each piece, from the first wrap to final placement on your home or gallery wall.

From careful crating to climate-controlled delivery, we take every precaution, so your art arrives exactly as it left.

NYC Fine Art Movers

Art transportation is risky: bumps, scratches, smudges, or serious damage can happen fast if movers mishandle it.

Because art is more delicate and cannot be replaced like furniture or decor, experienced movers make all the difference.

Want to move framed paintings, fragile sculptures, and multi-piece installations across NYC?

Imperial Movers offer safe, secure transport, expert packing, custom crating, and climate-controlled transportation and care.

Tips for Moving and Transporting Your Fine Art

lib-icon-9

Tip #1: Tape Glass To Prevent Shattering

Before wrapping art with glass, place painter’s tape in an X shape across the surface. If the glass breaks, this will hold the shards together, preventing them from scratching the artwork or causing injury during packing or unpacking.

lib-icon-5

Tip #2: Add a Static Barrier Before Wrapping

Moving glass-framed art? Before the bubble wrap, cover it with cardboard, foam, or mat board. This reduces static cling, which can pull on delicate finishes or materials and protects artwork against pressure and shifting in transit.

lib-icon-9

Tip #3: Use Adjustable Size Boxes

Choose boxes that match your artwork’s size, and pack only one piece per box. This limits movement inside and protects frames, corners, and surfaces. Oversized boxes or doubling up increases the chance of damage.

lib-icon-9

Tip #4: Transport Artwork Upright

We’ve seen what happens when art is laid flat: warped frames, cracked glass. Always keep pieces upright and labeled “This Side Up” clearly. It’s a simple trick that avoids costly mistakes.

lib-icon-9

Tip #5: Secure Artwork Inside the Truck

Even well-packed pieces can shift on bumpy roads. Use straps, corner braces, and non-slip mats to anchor your art and keep it in a stable position, especially during sudden stops or turns.

lib-icon-9

Tip #6: Avoid Acidic Packing Materials

Some packing paper, cardboard, or tissue contains acid that can react with certain artwork, affecting color and texture. Stick to acid-free materials, especially if you’re moving delicate pieces like photographs, prints, or mixed media.

lib-icon-9

Tip #7: Wrap and Disassemble Sculptures

Wrap sculptures thoroughly in bubble wrap and seal with packing tape for full protection. If you can, take apart sculptures and wrap each part separately. Add an extra layer of cushioning to the base or fragile corners.

lib-icon-9

Tip #8: Crate Sculptures With Extra Padding

Avoid using standard moving boxes for sculptures. Instead, go for foam-padded crates that fit the pieces you’re moving. Leave just enough extra space to absorb impact and keep the sculpture from breaking during transit.

lib-icon-9

Tip #9: Add a Moisture Barrier

Humidity can warp, stain, or damage delicate artwork. Before packing it, line the inside of the crate or box with bubble wrap or insulation paper to create a protective moisture barrier, especially if you’re moving longe distance.

lib-icon-9

Tip #10: Label Everything as Fragile

Mark all boxes or crates with “Fragile” so movers know they should treat them with extra care. Even if your art is well-packed, labeling helps avoid careless stacking, rough handling, or accidents during loading and unloading.

If disaster (or the weather) strikes and your movers suddenly can’t show up, what happens next will depend on a few different factors: the moving company itself, your current and future landlords, and the nature of your current and future leases. “There are a lot of variables that are affected by the cancellation,” says Ruma Ferdous of Imperial Moving. “For instance, clients are worried about finding another mover, making sure they have proper insurance to work in the building, if their current landlords will allow them to stay for another day or if they will charge another month’s rent, etc.”

Joanne Russo felt a sense of panic when she awoke on October 29 to a rain-soaked, wind-battered city and reports that the worst was yet to come. “The last thing we wanted was to get stuck,” said Ms. Russo. “We were afraid the movers would bail on us and then we wouldn’t be able to leave for days.” She was relieved when Imperial Moving called at 8 a.m. to say that they would be there in an hour. As businesses shut down and traffic vanished, the movers emptied the women’s two-bedroom on East 31st Street and carted their belongings to their new sixth-floor apartment at 20th Street and First Avenue. They finished shortly before the electricity went out and the elevator shuddered to a stop. Calling it a rough week barely begins to describe New York after Hurricane Sandy.

I’ve used Imperial Moving several times over the years—from a small studio move to most recently moving out of a 3-bedroom apartment, which included carrying a piano up 3 flight of stairs. Every single time, they’ve been professional, efficient, and incredibly reliable.

Their pre-move support is excellent—clear communication, transparent estimates, and helpful coordination that makes the process feel so smooth. On moving day, their crew always shows up on time, ready to work, and handles everything with care and attention. The movers are courteous, fast, and clearly experienced. Even with heavy or delicate items, they take the time to do things right.

We used Imperial Movers for our relocation in July 2023, and they did an absolutely fantastic job. Dr., the foreman, and the entire team were professional, diligent, energetic, and kind throughout the entire process.

Every item we owned was packed with care and arrived at our new home without a single scratch or anything missing. Their attention to detail and commitment to customer satisfaction made a typically stressful experience completely smooth and worry-free.

Their pricing was very fair, and what stood out even more was their integrity — not once did they try to upcharge us, even when opportunities naturally arose during the move. That kind of honesty is rare and deeply appreciated.

Highly recommend Imperial Movers — they truly go above and beyond!
